- Make sure the updates are checked off and then click "Download."
- Once the update has downloaded, exit out of the update box. Spybot may restart during the update. You can then run the system scan by clicking “Check for Problems.”
Running Spybot
These instructions will step you through running Spybot and removing any harmful objects it finds. These objects are common spyware, malware, and other harmful infections. The objects can slow down your computer, cause pop-ups, and even compromise your personal information.
- To run Spybot, double-click on its icon or start it from the ‘Programs’ list.
- A legal stuff popup will appear. This tells you that some programs require ad-ware to continue using them. Should you remove one of these programs you may cause some host applications to stop working, or be violating a license agreement. Click ‘OK’ to continue.
- We suggest you update Spybot before each time you run it.
- You are now ready to scan your computer. Click on the Check for problems button to begin.
- Spybot will now begin scanning your computer for objects. When it is finished, you can see how many objects it may have found. If it didn't find any, you will see a congratulations message, but in most cases it will find some objects.
- On the results screen you'll see a list of all the objects Spybot found. Make sure the check box is selected for all of the objects except a couple possible Windows Firewall / Security objects. If a couple “Windows” objects are listed: highlight the object by left-clicking on it, then right-click on it and choose ‘exclude this item from further scans.’
- When Spybot is finished cleaning up, it will place a green check next to each item it cleaned up.
- Spybot has now quarantined the objects it has found. If there are any items that were not fixed, Spybot will request to scan on the next reboot. Choose this option and reboot your machine when it is convenient for you.
If your computer was clean on the first scan, then you are all finished. If after a couple scans, Spybot continues to find infections; you may need to bring your machine in for further analysis.
We suggest you run AdAware 2007 to find any infections that Spybot may have overlooked.
